Tōfuku-ji

A wooded ravine cuts straight through Tōfuku-ji, crossed by a long roofed bridge, about two thousand maples below it. Beyond it, four dry-landscape gardens laid in 1939 under one condition: nothing already on the site could be thrown away. So the Big Dipper is seven foundation stones from the monks' latrine, and the chequerboards are the old imperial messengers' path. A garden built from a temple's own rubble.
