Nanzen-ji

A Roman-looking aqueduct of faded red brick strides straight through the grounds of Nanzen-ji, Japan's highest-ranked Zen temple, founded in 1291, and it still works. This is the Suirokaku, a Western-style water bridge from the Meiji era, built to carry the water of Lake Biwa over the mountains and revive a city the emperor had left. Stand beneath an arch, rest a hand on the old brick, and listen to the water still moving overhead.
