Eikan-dō

You walk up through this temple, not into it: every hall linked by one covered corridor climbing the hillside, maples at every window. At the top stands the Buddha Amida: 77 centimetres of carved wood, its head turned back over one shoulder. The temple's own account says it stepped down off the altar before dawn in 1082, walked ahead of the priest Eikan, looked back and told him he was slow, and has held the pose since.
