Kamigamo Jinja

Shinto shrine, Central Kyoto

Ukiyo-e illustration of the two cones of sand in front of the halls of Kamigamo Jinja

Past the second torii (the gateways to a shrine), two large cones of sand stand on the gravel. They are the tatesuna: a portrait of Mount Kōyama, the hill about two kilometres away that this shrine's own account says its thunder deity came down onto. The main sanctuary is built to face it. Come for the story the shrine tells about itself (an arrow in a stream, a boy who left through the roof) at one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto.
